The Maafaru Airport project constituted an essential step to revitalising the tourism sector in the Maldives. The ADFD-funded airport in the Noonu atoll is particularly important to serve the nation’s northeast region and boost the tourism sector. A vibrant tourism sector is creating jobs for the local population and supporting the country’s SDGs. The airport’s second phase of expansion includes extending the runway by 650 meters and widening the passages to accommodate larger aircraft. The project also includes dredging and backfilling construction works to protect beaches.
